Saints & Mentors for Catechists: Mary Magdalene
Oct 02, 2026
Mentioned by name twelve times in the Gospels, Mary (from the town of Magdala on the Sea of Galilee) was one of a group of women who traveled with Jesus during his public ministry. (Mary Magdalene has often been regarded as sexually immoral, but this is not supported in Scripture.)
In all four gospels, Mary Magdalene was a witness to the crucifixion of Jesus and, in the Synoptic Gospels, she was also present at his burial. She is also the first one to see the empty tomb, having gone to care for the dead body of Jesus. Initially, she thought that his body had been stolen or was missing.
When she personally encountered Jesus in the garden near the tomb and heard Jesus call her by name she understood that Jesus was alive. She is the first to touch Jesus after the resurrection, and the one chosen by Jesus to announce the good news to the apostles who were huddled in the upper room.
Mary Magdalene is recognized as a saint by the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran churches. In 2016 Pope Francis changed July 22 from a memorial to a feast, a day to be celebrated universally throughout the Church on par with feasts of the apostles. He also called Mary the “Apostle to the Apostles,” an ancient designation first used for her by St. Thomas Aquinas.
In Scripture we never see Mary wavering in her support of Jesus. In our daily lives, and perhaps at various times in our catechetical ministry, things seem difficult. We wonder: Am I making a difference? Does my time here really matter? I’m sure someone else could do this better; is it time for me to just bow out of this ministry?
Mary Magdalene is a witness for us of steadfast dedication – through the good times and the difficult times. Even though we might not see the fruit of our labors, we remain committed because of the person, Jesus.
Reflections to Hold, Pray, and Live
-
Mary was committed because of her relationship with Jesus. What helps me – not just know about Jesus – but deepen my relationship with Jesus?
-
Mary did not waver because she remembered God’s promises which Jesus taught. What promises in Scripture support and encourage me?
